Neurology:
Focuses on nonsurgical treatment of nervous system disorders, including diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles.
Neurosurgery:
Surgical treatment of diseases relating to the brain, spinal cord and nerve roots.
Neuroradiology:
A subspecialty of radiology devoted to diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the brain, spine and other parts of the nervous system.
Neuropsychology:
The science of brain-behavior relationships. The clinical neuropsychologist uses principles based on human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system.
Neuro-oncology and radiation oncology:
Cancer treatment specialties that include medical oncology and neurosurgery. Oncologists treat brain and spinal cord tumors as well as cancers that spread to the brain and spine.
Physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation):
A branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders— particularly those of the nervous system, muscles, bones, heart, blood vessels and lung systems—that may produce temporary or permanent impairment. Focus is on the functioning of the whole person, instead of just an organ system.
Chiropractic:
Focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and their effects on the nervous system. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat nerve, muscle and bone complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, sciatica, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
Anesthesiology and pain management:
Offering many pain management techniques, including medications and injections, to improve quality of life.
Physical therapy: Instruction on body mechanics, posture and ways to improve range of motion and strength. Includes pain management techniques.
Occupational therapy:
Helps restore and improve function needed for activities of daily living, including work functioning.
Health and rehabilitation psychology:
Improves coping, adjustment to physical limitations, and management of associated stress, anxiety and depression.
