Lifeguard training

Students must be 15 years old by the last day of class, be able to complete a 500-yard continuous swim, tread water for two minutes while using legs only, retrieve a 10-pound brick from 10 feet of water and swim 20 yards with both hands on the brick. The course focuses on the job of a lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. The class will emphasize victim recognition surveillance; equipment-based rescues and includes first aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. A minimum of six participants must be registered for the class to be held.

Water Safety Instructor Class (WSI)

The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross swimming and water safety courses. This includes: Learn to Swim Programs Level 1-7, Infant and Pre-school Aquatics, Community Water Safety, and Basic Water Safety. Participants must be 17 years old by the end of the course. Requires successful completion of a pre-course swimming test of 500 yards.

Lifeguarding update and CPR-PR recertification

This is for persons who must recertify in CPR-PR and lifeguard training. It includes the crossover and update to the new 2001 revised lifeguarding. Lifeguards are required to recertify every three years for lifeguarding and first aid. CPR-PR is required every year. This is not a review course; this is a challenge out, and participants should come prepared to test their skills and take the written test.

Lifeguard instructor class

The purpose of the American Red Cross lifeguarding instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach lifeguard training including first aid, lifeguard management, CPR for the PR, AED essentials, O2 administration for the PR, PDT, community water safety and basic water rescue. This course prepares instructor candidates by developing their understanding of how to use course materials and how to conduct training sessions.

WSI aide

Individuals who are at least 10 years old and exhibit a strong sense of maturity and responsibility are eligible to be trained as WSI aides. Aide candidates must be able to demonstrate all skills listed as completion requirements for Level IV of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program.

Jr. Lifeguarding

Jr. Lifeguarding is a program designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross lifeguarding program by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for future lifeguards. This program is designed for 11-year-olds, or students that have completed fifth grade, through 14 years old. Jr. Lifeguarding does not give participants the information and skills they need to be certified as a lifeguard.
